Another weekend, another Fightin’ Texas Aggie Hockey matchup! This time, the Aggies played host to the University of Texas - El Paso Miners. On Friday, the two teams lined up for the first time since A&M fell to the Miners in the 2018 TCHC Playoffs. Once again, the Aggies failed to score first, but immediately answered with a goal from freshman Hank Rooney to close out the first period. The maroon and white would then have pinpoint passing from freshman Alec Monhollen to senior Nick Early and finally to sophomore Jarrett Taylor for his first goal of the season and put the Aggies on top 2-1 after two. However, the third would see penalties halt the Aggie offense and two goals from UTEP would put them back in the lead before junior Jack Greer would sweep home a rebound late in the period to tie the game at three. It was short-lived however, as the game would head to overtime and UTEP would squeak one past freshman Joseph Reynolds to win, 4-3. Reynolds would have his record fall to 2-2-1.

On Saturday, it was more of the same for the first 10 minutes with A&M controlling the play until a miscue would see UTEP go on the attack, both goalies stood on their head for their respective clubs and the first period would go scoreless. As for the second period, UTEP would score first, but an immediate answer goal off the ensuing faceoff from sophomore Justin Rueve and then another goal less than 90 seconds later from Rooney would put A&M up 2-1. Near the end of the period, a sweet feed off a turn in front of the net by junior Huston Svondrk would see the Aggies go up 3-1 after the second stanza. In the third period, A&M would take control early and add a much-needed insurance goal from senior captain Gary Russell to go up 4-1 until a UTEP goal would cut the lead to 4-2. Reynolds would again step up to make some clutch saves and help the Aggies hang on for the 4-2 win to snap a five game skid for the club.

This upcoming weekend, A&M will head north to Dallas for a two game set with the Patriots of Dallas Baptist University. Friday will take place at the Dr. Pepper Starcenter in Valley Ranch at 8:00 PM. The following day, the teams will face off for a 2:30 PM matinee at the Allen Event Center as part of opening night for the ECHL Allen Americans presented by Layne’s Chicken. Tickets for the second game will allow access to both the TCHC and ECHL matchups at the Event Center. Advance ticket purchase available here: https://www.fevo.com/edp/Hockey-Night-in-Allen--DBU-vs-Texas-AM-Game-presented-by-Laynes-Chicken-mxfYhYq?referrer_hash=je1wWzb2
