Texas A&M Ice Hockey opened the weekend with a split against the University of North Texas Mean Green Eagles at Spirit Ice Arena, earning a 9-2 victory Friday night before falling 3-1 in Saturday’s matchup.
The Aggies set the tone Friday during Patriotic Night, feeding off a nearly full crowd while wearing red, white and blue jerseys. A&M’s offense found its rhythm early, building a 4-0 lead in the first period behind goals from junior forward Andrew Green, senior forward assistant captain Cade Willis and senior forward captain Lucas Lisciandro. The Aggies continued to generate scoring opportunities throughout the game, with Green completing a hat trick in the closing seconds to secure the 9-2 win.
Saturday’s rematch presented a different challenge as North Texas held A&M scoreless through the first two periods. Sophomore forward Bryce Millington put the Aggies on the score board in the third, but the Mean Green maintained their lead and added an empty-net goal to take the 3-1 victory, splitting the weekend series.

Expedition Game: Setting the tone in rivalry matchup against The University of Texas
Following the weekend split, the Aggies turned their attention to a familiar opponent, traveling to Houston on Sunday, Oct. 25, to face their longtime rivals, the University of Texas at Austin, at Deep South Ice and Sports Complex.
The rivalry atmosphere was evident from the opening puck drop as both teams entered the first period looking to establish control. A&M and Texas traded offensive pressure, with each side’s defense working to limit opportunities and prevent opposing players from finding open lanes to the net. Neither team managed to break through in the open period, setting the tone for a fast-paced second.
The Aggies found their opening opportunity with 15:30 remaining in the second period. Following a faceoff, Millington positioned himself for a pass from sophomore center Konstantin Deshevyy and put the puck past the Texas goaltender to give A&M a 1-0 lead. The Aggies continued to build on their momentum, as freshman forward Carson Friske worked past Texas defenders and found the back of the net with 3:20 remaining in the period.

A&M added to its lead just 38 seconds later. With an assist from senior forward Colson Zak, Lisciandro found an opening through the Texas defense and slipped the puck into the net with 2:42 remaining. The Aggies entered the final period with a 3-0 advantage, continuing to produce offensive opportunities and putting pressure on the Texas defense throughout the period.
A&M carried this momentum into the final period, with senior forward Nicholas Leone extending the lead to 4-0 at the 15:14 mark. Leone worked past a Texas defender to put the puck in the net. The Longhorns managed to get on the scoreboard later in the third period, but the Aggies responded with another goal from Lisciandro with 2:54 remaining. The puck went off sophomore goaltender Wyatt Wilhelm's stick, straight to junior defensemen Jack Bowdich, then to Colson Zak before finding Lisciandro at the perfect time to lock up the win. The play highlighted the contributions coming from throughout the lineup, including from the defensive end of the ice. His second goal of the night secured the 5-1 victory for A&M.
This specific game reflected the Aggies’ continued progress throughout the season, with strong offensive pressure and defensive consistency carrying out a competitive rivalry matchup. A&M demonstrated its ability to create scoring opportunities, work together across the lineup and maintain control over one of its most familiar opponents.
The rivalry is far from over, as the Aggies will face the Longhorns again during Rivalry Week for a two-game series. Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 6, at 8pm at Chaparral Ice in Austin, TX, with Game 2 returning to Spirit Ice Arena in College Station on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7pm.
Saturday’s home matchup will feature a Blackout theme, and Aggie fans are encouraged to wear black and pack Spirit Ice Arena to support the team.
