This past Friday, the boys in maroon and white welcomed the University of Texas Longhorns for a one-game showdown of one of the state of Texas’ greatest rivalries. The Aggies took to home ice in front of a sold-out Spirit Ice Arena with the intention of handing the Longhorns their first loss of the season. The Aggies got to work on the power play in the first period, getting goals from freshman Jarrett Taylor and senior Calyn Clardy on two separate man-advantages to take a 2-0 lead into the dressing rooms. In the second period, the offense for both teams exploded for 7 goals combined. The Aggies jumped out to a four-goal lead with goals from sophomore Michael O’Reilly and junior Kaleb Croft, only 1:28 into the period. The Longhorns ended freshman Brydon Gillilan’s shutout bid a little over halfway through the game with a goal on the power play from Shaan Greenberg, but the response was immediate on the power-play from sophomore Taylor Pennell and then the Aggies jumped out to their biggest lead of the night, 6-1, on a goal from sophomore Huston Svondrk. Before the second frame ended, 2 goals from the Longhorns’ Alec Pillar saw the game become a little more interesting with a score of 6-3. In the final stanza, Texas’ Kevin Chen would see the Aggie lead fall back to 2. 5 minutes later, senior Garrett Finn would put the icing on the cake and the Aggies would finish the game with a 7-4 win. 18 Longhorn shots were put aside by Brydon Gillilan with another spectacular performance.
The Aggies will play host this upcoming weekend to the Dallas Baptist University Patriots at the Aerodrome in Houston. Tickets are currently on sale at the shop inside the rink for both the Friday and Saturday games with puck drops or both set at 7:30 PM.
