Texas A&M University Aggies (11) VS. University of Texas Longhorns (3)
After a huge win against UT in College Station, the Aggies traveled to Austin to take on the Longhorns on their home ice. Both teams were looking for a win, and both UT and A&M fans were crammed into the stands to see another great match-up.
Once again, the game started off at a furious pace. The Aggies took advantage of a power play about four minutes in; after receiving a pass from Michael Molge, rookie Nick Kolodziej skated the puck across the net and shot low blocker side to score the first goal of the game with 15:54 to go in the first period. Three minutes later, Nick Xenakis stole the puck in the defensive zone, skated into the Longhorns’ zone, and passed it to Cooley. His shot ricocheted off the post and into the net for a 2-0 Aggie lead at 12:42.
The Aggies kept plowing forward; with 11:44 on the clock, Michael Young picked up the puck in the defensive zone and shot from the offensive blue line. The puck deflected off of the goalie’s glove and into the net, 3-0. Two and a half minutes later, a faceoff win by Nick Xenakis went to Young, whose slapshot from the point slid through the goalie’s five-hole, 4-0.
The first-period scoring frenzy still wasn’t over. Jeff Diltz took a one-timer off of a pass from Dustin Roark and buried it with 4:22 remaining in the period—5-0. Eleven seconds later, a repeat performance by Diltz and Roark resulted in another goal, and the period ended with the Aggies ahead, 6-0.
The majority of the second period went by uneventfully; with 43 seconds to go in the period, Nick Culltion took advantage of a power play and took a shot from the point. A deflection by Xenakis sent it into the net for a score of 7-0.
The Longhorns put themselves on the scoreboard only six seconds later, and the second ended with the Aggies still ahead by six.
During the third period, the Aggies regained their feverish pace. Only 3:20 into the period, Eric Engelking picked up a rebound from Aubrey Berkowitz and brought the score to 8-1.
Eleven minutes passed before Engelking accepted a pass from Xenakis in front of the net, dangled the goalie, and shot the puck top shelf to score his second goal of the night with 5:47 remaining in the game.
27 seconds later, Texas responded with another goal of their own and brought the score to 9-2.
Determined to push the score to double-digits, the Aggies kept up the tempo. Michael Zahner one-timed it home off a pass from Dustin Roark with 2:26 on the clock. With 1:31 remaining, Cooley found the loose puck in front of the net and buried it in a rebound; the score became 11-2, Aggies.
Texas slipped in one last goal 1:03 before the game ended; the final score was 11-3.
This massive win ended the Aggies’ series against the Longhorns, and A&M emerged undefeated after five games against the University of Texas.
