Texas A&M University Aggies (1) VS. University of Central Oklahoma Broncos (6)

The Texas A&M Ice Hockey Team traveled to Edmond, Oklahoma for a weekend series against the Broncos – our first Division I opponent for our season and the history of our program.

Both teams are enjoying early successes in their respective schedules and both teams are ranked in their respective classifications. These contests will be strong indicators for our program – current and future.

The Aggies left the gate with a strong effort as the early shifts established a strong tempo for the game. With less than three minutes expired into the game, A&M tallied on a power play opportunity. With pressure and puck movement into the UCO zone, the play cycled behind the net. On a nice give-and-go, Assistant Captain Eric Engelking fed Michael Molge on defense at the top of the slot. Finding open ice, Molge fired a low, hard wrist shot. Engelking moved to partially screen the goaltender and with a neat tip shot, Aggies lead 1-0.

Both teams competed on a strong, consistent pace but failed to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.

The second period opened with the same tempo – physical, controlled puck movement with isolated scoring opportunities.

With 7:30 remaining in the second period, UCO evened the score. The Broncos finished the scoring with two goals and the period ends, Broncos 3-1.

The Aggies played a competitive game against a well-coached, well-disciplined team with size and depth associated with programs of higher classification. The Aggies continued to battle, but were defeated by a final 6-1 score.

Game Notes:

A&M scored the first goal and kept the lead through the mid-point of the second period.

11 minor penalties assessed – A&M 5, UCO 6.

Aggies created 26 shots. Our goaltender, Kyle Vrla, responded admirably to 59 shots from a very persistent Bronco offense.

Outstanding officiating – thank you!
