Texas A&M University Aggies (4) VS. University of Texas Longhorns (1)
The Aggies traveled to Austin, Texas for the first of five games for the season and the season opener for the Longhorns. As we have done for the past several years, the weekend series consists of Home and Home games during the same weekend.
Friday evening’s contest was a physical, fast paced, and well-officiated hockey game typical of the continuing series. Multiple clean, hard, open ice hits dominated the tempo of the game.
The Aggies controlled the play from the onset with aggressive pressure and multiple scoring opportunities but were unable to tally as the period ends in a scoreless tie.
At 15:29 of the second period, the Aggies score on a power play opportunity. Michael Molge moves the puck from the point to Assistant Captain Eric Engelking deep in the Longhorn zone. A quick shot and Justin Cooley pounces on the rebound.
Less than two minutes later, Brian Young establishes control from the point and finds Mark Moreno at the top of the circle. As defenders move to the puck, Moreno dumps it to John Rortvedt II and a slap shot finds the back of the net.
The Longhorns earn their single score at 8:01 of the period.
A&M regained their two goal lead at 4:15 on another power play situation. Cooley maintained control deep into UT territory. As Nick Xenakis is crashing the net, Dustin Roark persistently bangs home the rebound. The period ends, 3-1, Aggies.
With just over four minutes elapsed into the 3rd period, the Aggies score the final goal of the contest on another power play opportunity. Cooley moves the puck deep into the Longhorn zone and patiently waits for Engelking. Another quick shot and Assistant Captain Jeff Diltz finds a rebound and fires it to the top corner for a final 4-1 score.
Game Notes:
Perhaps the most physical game between these two teams in the last 5+ years.
