Texas A&M University Aggies (2) VS. University of California - Long Beach 49ers (3)
To start the Spring 2009 semester, the Aggies traveled to California for a three game stand against our coastal counterparts. The 49ers are constantly tested in their tough division, and the Aggies welcomed the challenge.
With a game start time of mid-night Texas time, the Aggies struggled from the opening face-off. The 49ers came to play, and at the midpoint of the period, fired home the lone score of the frame.
The Aggies got on the board within the first two minutes of the second period. Assistant Captains Jeff Diltz and Eric Engelking cycled the puck low in Long Beach territory. From a quick pass to the low slot, line mate Justin Cooley found the back of the net, 1-1.
Three minutes later, the 49ers regained their lead.
A&M responded with 4:57 remaining in the second period. From constant pressure in front of the host’s goaltender, Diltz directed the puck to defenseman John Rortvedt. On a tip play, Cooley evened the score and the period expired, 2-2.
Both teams battled through the third period – tentative, conservative, exhausted. With 1:14 remaining, Long Beach scored on a power play opportunity.
With time closing out, A&M forced a face off in the 49er’s zone. The Aggies also pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, but could not find the tying score. Time expired, 3-2 Long Beach.
We congratulate the Long Beach 49ers on their hard fought victory, and we look forward to a future re-match.
The Aggies hit the road and traveled north to San Jose for the Friday and Saturday evening contests against the Spartans.
